National Institute of Secondary
Steel
Technology is a premier Institute catering to the needs of
Secondary
Steel sector. The Institute is
under the aegis of Ministry of Steel and has come a long way today
since it
was established in 1987, under the Chairmanship of Development
Commissioner
for Iron and Steel.

|
|
 The following areas
of secondary steel sector
are under the purview of the Institute:
The Institute is
located at Mandi Gobindgarh
(Punjab). It has two regional
Centers at Nagpur and Calcutta. Other
centers are also being planned in different regions of the
country.
|
|
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
|
|
1. To provide trained technical manpower to the Secondary Steel Sector through long-term courses and to update their knowledge–base by conducting short-term continuing education programmes.
2. To bring awareness about the state of art technology by holding
seminars, workshops, symposia etc.
3. To provide various industrial services and testing facilities.
|
|
4. To extend consultancy service to industry towards Technological
Trouble Shooting, Quality Improvement, Product Development,
Productivity and
Energy Efficiency Improvement, Cost Reduction and Reducing
Pollution Levels.
|
|
5. To
conduct research, development and design work in frontier areas for
providing updated technology to this sector.
|
|
6. To organise for documentation and
information
retrieval services to the industry.
|
7. To provide the platform for
interaction
between industry and educational as well as research
institutions.
|
|
VISION
|
|
NISST will
be the premier Institute in the country channelising state of
art knowledge and expertise catering to the various needs of the
industries of secondary sector and helping the country to achieve
the
desired fast and healthy growth of this core industrial sector,
resulting in
big economic environmental and societal gains in the long run to
the
country.

FACILITIES
The Institute is in the process of adding many new equipments
in the
following already working laboratories
|
|
Energy Lab: It is equipped with
very sophisticated
instruments for the analysis and quantitative measurement of
specific
properties of all types of fuels.It
has the necessary equipments for Thermal Audits of Reheating
Furnaces,
Cupolas and Induction Furnaces.
|
|
|
|
Pollution Control Lab: This lab is
approved by Punjab Control Board for air emissions.The lab has
facilities for both air & water pollution testing.It has the latest
equipments for accurate monitoring and the
Institute provides consultancy in designing pollution control
devices.
|
|
|
|
Metallurgical Lab:
It has the
most modern metallurgical microscopes fitted with CCTV cameras and
photo
developing facilities. It has also the latest laboratory model
Direct
Reading Spectrometer of 24 channels including Nitrogen. It is also
planning
for Image Analyser. It can take up industrial research activities
as well in
the areas of Ferrous Metallurgy.

Chemical/Analytical Lab: It
has spectrophotometer and also other equipments for Quantitative
analysis of
the samples of iron and steel. It
is being geared up as an Express Lab for needy manufacturing units
/ traders
/ stockists / other
agencies.

Electrical Lab:
Besides comprehensive electrical energy
audit
for Re-rolling Mills,Induction Furnaces etc the lab has following
facilities:

Transformer Oil
Filteration/Dehydration
facility.

Dielectric strength
testing
of Transformer oil and OCBs

Insulation
Resistance
Testing.

Earthing
Testing.

Mechanical &
NDT Lab: It is not only
equipped for basic tests like hardness, tensile & impact
strength but
also for ultrasound and magnetic flaw detection tests. It has the portable type of equipments for on-the-spot
determination
of mechanical properties. It is
planning for the more sophisticated instruments for creep and
fatigue tests
also.
